The Prima Diva Look in 10 Easy Steps



Dancers performing on stage make us feel like a part of the story they are telling. It is so easy to become captivated by their beautiful faces. What is it that holds us so spellbound? Dance makeup greatly intensifies a dancer's eyes making it effortless for them to pull us in. With a little direction this seemingly complicated perfect classic dancer look could be yours too!

We call Prima Diva the classic dance performance makeup look. The expressive eyes are the most crucial part of this look. To start lets discuss some basic contouring patterns for eye makeup.

Using darker eye shadow to create dimension is what it means to "contour" the eye. There are three main ways to do this. These techniques work together or separately you can choose based on the look you are trying to create.

1. With a dark, earthy eye shadow color, draw across the whole lash line gradually fading the shadow as you pull the color up past the crease towards the brow bone.

2. Apply shadow to create a sideways "v" or "c" shape with a contour color, on the outer third of the eyelid.

3. Use contour eye shadow color in the crease.

Use of these dance makeup techniques helps the audience to follow the dancer's eyes. You draw attention to the natural shape and dimension of the eye. Doing this helps the viewers follow the dancer's gaze. Using performance cosmetics to contour the eye makes seeing if the dancer's eyes are open, closed, or looking at something specifically easier. This look also creates larger, wider almond shaped eyes.

The perfect dance eye in the Prima Diva look requires several of these contouring techniques. Follow these straight forward steps to get this classic dance makeup look.

Creating the Prima Diva Look

1. Start with your foundation. Keep in mind you must BLEND, BLEND, and BLEND!

2. Use your brush to shape your eyebrows. Using a shadow that is a similar in color to your natural eyebrow fill the brow.

3. Use a white liner to highlight under the brow line.

4. With a light/medium, warm-toned, neutral eye shadow go over the entire eyelid. Neutral/warm earth-toned eye shadows are perfect for stage performances. This performance cosmetic compliments the dancer's eyes and skin even under stage lights.

5. Create dimension by blending a deep, rich, dark brown shadow into the crease of the eye.

6. Line the upper lashes with waterproof black eye liner to create definition. Underneath the lash line apply chocolate brown shadow with a small angled brush. Liquid liner under the eye is too messy, don't do it! Lastly use a white pencil to highlight in between the upper and lower lash lines.

7. The inside of lower lash line should be highlighted with a white eye pencil. Black liner shouldn't be used as it will make the eye appear smaller on stage.

8. Your false lashes go on next. Black mascara can be used to coat and bind them. Using false lash will augment the natural shape of your eye.

9. Apply blush, remembering to BLEND! No clown cheeks!

10. Last line and the fill the entire lip using your lip pencil. Here's a tip: apply from the outside corner to the middle of the lip when lining and filling. Complete the look by filling in the lips with lipstick.

Your goal should be to have your makeup dark enough to be seen clearly from the first 8 to 12 rows of the theatre. 2 Keys to a Healthier Life



I've been hearing a lot about metabolic syndrome, but really didn't know what it meant. So I did some research.

According to PubMed Health, a website specializing in reviews of clinical effectiveness research with easy-to-read summaries for consumers, metabolic syndrome is a combination of risk factors including a large waist size, high triglycerides, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. More and more Americans are being diagnosed with the syndrome, as more and more Americans struggle with weight issues. This is cause for concern, as complications from these risk factors include Type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, peripheral artery disease - none of which sound like fun.

The good news is that we have the power to control, or even prevent all of these dire consequences by doing two simple things; 1) If you smoke, quit, and 2) Lose weight. Isn't that amazing? As I've said before, it's not easy easy, but it is simple. In order to lose weight, we need to do two things.

Key #1 We need pay attention to what we eat. Limit the red meat and eat more oily fish. Examples of oily fish are: Salmon, Mackerel, Trout, Tuna, Herring, Swordfish, Carp, and Eel. Anybody got any good eel recipes? I've written before about what's working for me is to cut way back on my carbs, getting most of them from fruit and veggies. But we all lose weight differently. The trick is finding out what works for you.

Key #2 According to the site, we need to do at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days. If you're ADD like me, sometimes it's easier to do three 10 minute walks, and that's okay, it counts. Find something that you enjoy doing so it doesn't feel like torture. I am so lucky that where I live there are multiple, gorgeous places to walk, and the weather is never too bad. My friend, Nan, who lives in beautiful Vermont, but where the winters are long and cold, swears by Leslie Sansone and her Walk at Home DV's. I just checked out the site, and it looks like fun. I think I'll buy one for windy, rainy days like today is here.

We need to keep track of our cholesterol levels and our blood pressure. If you need to be on medication, take it, but losing weight and exercising can help get both of those things under control. Isn't that cool?

As I've been learning more and more about people living with chronic conditions, I'm becoming increasingly aware of how what we eat and how much we move our bodies are the keys to how we manage those conditions. So many of those chronic illnesses are within our own power to manage. Realizing I have that power makes it a lot easier for me to eat right and get out there and go for a walk.

The Big Secret to Great Dance Eyes



Do you want large, beautiful, expressive eyes? When applying makeup for dance, or any other live performance, your emotion is expressed through your eyes. Let your glowing performance shine even brighter with well applied dance makeup!

When applying makeup for dance performances, dancers should wear liner, false eyelashes and mascara.

First, let's focus on EYELINER!

• Apply your eye shadows first in the pattern you love

• Upper lash line: Black liquid liner (waterproof)

• Inside lower lash line: White Highlighter pencil

• Lower lash line: Use a dark brown mineral eye shadow color as a liner

• You can do a tiny "wing" on the upper lash line with your liquid liner. This is to indicate the "last eyelash" - but no more than a quarter of an inch or so.

• Avoid making long stripes with your eye liner that go all the way to the temples. Avoid connecting the lower lash line to the upper lash line, leave a space between them (no "fishtails", please) and use white highlighter pencil in between. This will make the eyes look bigger, brighter and more open.

• When applying makeup for dance, DON'T use black liquid eyeliner under the eyes! Too much and too messy! If you must, use an eye pencil.

• Also, don't use black liner on the inside lower lid of the eye - it will make the eyes look small on stage.

Next, apply the FALSE LASHES!

• If false eye lashes aren't currently part of your routine because you find them difficult to apply or uncomfortable to wear, don't give up on them! Do use them, as they enhance the shape of your eyes on stage and are an integral part of makeup for dance. It just takes practice!

• Dancers wear false lashes because on stage we are always trying to make the eyes look bigger. We want to naturally enhance the existing lash line with false lashes because they give the eyes a pretty almond-y shape. Great false lashes, properly sized and/or trimmed, and properly applied do just that. This type of look is perfect for dance makeup, but is also easily modified for other theatrical occasions, including acting on film and even just a glamorous look for a special night out.

• Avoid lashes that are too thick in the center of the band. They make the eyes look heavy and sleepy or even closed when you are dancing on stage! You want the lashes to start shorter in the center and get longer as they go to the outer corner of the eye. Half or "demi" lashes are great because they are easy to apply, do not need to be trimmed, look stunning, and can hardly be felt on the eyes.

Time for the MASCARA!

• YES, you need mascara even if you have false lashes on - two coats! This will bind the false lashes to the real lashes and remove the bits of powdered eye shadow that have fallen on the eyelashes.

• Make sure your lashes are secure first! Leave them alone to dry before going onto the next step of your dance makeup.

• I recommend water-resistant mascara as opposed to waterproof mascara because it is gentler on the sensitive eye area and can also be easily reapplied. Most waterproof mascaras are quite clumpy and feel like glue on the lashes. Waterproof mascara is also clumpy on false lashes and can collect lots of "gunk" on them - your lashes will not last as long.

Get ready to apply your dance makeup like a pro! You just have to remember these three MUST HAVES for your eyes: liner, lashes, and mascara! These three things will get you big, beautiful eyes!

How Much Caffeine Should You Consume?



There are four main levels of caffeine consumption, known as Common, Moderate, Heavy and Lethal. Knowing the different effects associated with these doses is a key to knowing how much Coffee/tea/chocolate/supplement you should ingest.

A common dose of Caffeine is around 50-150mg. Roughly this much Caffeine can be contained in an average sized coffee (7 oz.) or three cans of Cola. Majority of people take this much caffeine daily. A common dose grants most of the positive effects of caffeine (increased focus, memory and a more awake feeling) with little negative effects. Another reason why this is called a common dose is because it prevents your body from going into withdrawal, if you are a chronic caffeine consumer. For daily use this is the most recommended dose.

If you're heavily sleep deprived, or need to perform at your absolute best for an important event, it might be beneficial to take a "Moderate" dose of caffeine (150-400mg). The effects from this amount of caffeine become much more noticeable. At this level you should be feeling wide awake, and almost jittery with all the energy. With all this caffeine your body will be producing significantly more dopamine and adrenaline, which are important hormones when it comes to being at your best. The drawback is the recovery time your body will need after the drug wares off. It is important to take a break to let your nervous system reset after such a stressful event. In summary a moderate dose is ok occasionally, and after such a dose it is wise to back off caffeine to let the body recharge.

Problems start to show up with continual use moderate or higher level doses. This level of dose keeps your body in a state of elevated stress levels, and can lead increased tolerance as well as addiction. At this level your body will start to require more caffeine in order to reap the same benefits, and become dependent on the substance in order to function.

This is when people commonly start taking Heavy doses of caffeine. A Heavy dose is over 400mg of caffeine. This equals around 3 cups of typical coffee. This much caffeine is excessive when you are trying to get the performance benefits of caffeine, and the only reason this much caffeine should be needed is if you're tolerance has been raised higher than average due to repeat consumption. If you find yourself needing to take over 400mg caffeine to feel the effects, or even to merely avoid the symptoms of withdrawal, you should start limiting your consumption.

Finally I'm sure you're curious as to how much caffeine it would take to kill a person. The Lethal dose ranges from 3-20 grams. A dose of this volume has a potential to kill or warrant a trip to the hospital. It would be very difficult to have this much caffeine in a day, and deaths by overdose of caffeine are very rare.

The Ten Commandments for Getting Lean Fast

This rule will change your mental clarity, energy levels, quality of life, body shape, and basically every aspect of your life. Don't be scared, once your body gets used to it, it will crave whole foods!

2. COUNT CALORIES! Get to know what you are stuffing your face with!

This is one of the most mind-blowing, helpful ways to shrink your waistline. You don't need to count calories for the rest of your life, just until you learn how many calories are in the foods you eat. An awesome and FREE app or online site called MyFitnessPal will make calorie counting a cinch. This site also tells you how many calories you should consume according to your weight loss/weight gain goals.

3. Divide your plate into THREE parts!

The main portion of your meals should be vegetables with a lean meat and whole grain as sides. Your plate should be composed of 50% fruits and vegetables, 25% lean protein (ex. fish, chicken, turkey, and tofu), and 25% whole grains or other complex carbohydrates (ex. brown rice, whole wheat pasta, oatmeal, and baked potato). Of course, very un-American but you are about to make a change right?! Again, remember to count your calories!

4. STOP PIGGING OUT! Are you a social-eater?

Discipline your mind to manage your waistline! We tend to let ourselves over-indulge at parties, family get-togethers, and on weekends because we mentally allow ourselves to relax with our diet. This is a common culprit for weight gain and will sabotage any butt-kicking exercise you do during the week. Basically, every month has a holiday, party, or family get-together and every weekend usually has at least one night out. If you are overeating at each of these events, your gut will begin to eat the rest of your body! An easy way to maintain control at events is to bring something tasty that is healthy and munch on that all night! I know where your mind is going and yes, there are many things that are tasty AND healthy.

5. Don't get HUNGRY! Why do we crave sugary, salty foods?

Your body is an amazing machine that transforms the carbohydrates you eat into blood sugar (glucose), which our body uses for energy. Our pancreas then secretes a hormone called insulin to transport the blood sugar into our cells so they can use it as energy. When we eat processed foods and foods that are high in sugar we cause an insulin surge to get all that blood sugar (energy) into our cells. This insulin surge takes the blood sugar out of our blood too quickly, which causes our blood sugar level to drop too low. You then feel hungry and tired, which causes you to crave sugary or salty carbs to quickly increase your blood sugar levels! Which will then crash again soon, causing you to do the same thing again, and again. Vicious isn't it? Instead of allowing yourself to get hungry and fall into this cycle, eat smaller portions throughout the day high or eat three bigger meals and then have small healthy snacks between each meal. Healthy snacks would be nuts, fruit, or veggies. Fiber and complex carbohydrates are also important in maintaining blood sugar levels.

6. Do Cardio and Strength Training! Yes ladies, lift weights!

When making your workout plan, you should do at least three days of cardio training and two days of strength training a week. (ACE, Personal Trainer Manual) Cardio training is typically continuous movement of the legs for at least 30 minutes, such as walking, jogging, elliptical training, swimming, or most sports. Strength training is primarily training with free weights, weight machines, or using one's own body weight. When strength training, you can work all of your major muscle groups at one time, or you can work opposite groups on different days. For instance, you may want to do upper body one day, and lower body the next day.

7. NO EXCUSES! Stick to a workout plan and food plan for Pete's sake!

Do NOT wait until you "feel" like working out or decide what you "feel" like for dinner when you get home from work. Both huge mistakes because guess what, YOU WON'T "feel" like working out and you WILL PIG OUT! With that said, your workout plan should consists of AT LEAST 3 days, preferably 6 days, a week of exercise for 45 minutes. Does that seem impossible for you? What if I told you that if you did something for 45 minutes a day, you would live 5 years longer, have a better quality of life, have less anxiety, have a better sex life, be more confident, have more energy, be more efficient at your job, have better mental clarity, and have more to give to your family, what would you say? That's right, make time.

As far as a food plan, plan out your meals for each week on Sunday so you will be able to resist rummaging through the cupboards and grabbing some processed, sugary, salty garbage to poison your body with. Try doing your cooking on Sunday for the week and putting it in the fridge or freezer for the week! I make a big pot of oatmeal on Sunday night and put it into 5 coffee mugs, cover them with aluminum foil, and place them in the fridge. Each morning I grab one out of the fridge, pour a little milk in the mug, warm it up, and eat it on the way to work. EASY & HEALTHY!

8. Make Personal Measurable Goals. It takes 5 minutes but will change your life!

Make up measurable goals with a timeline and have a friend or trainer hold you accountable for reaching them. Examples of goals are, "Be able to run for 20 minutes in 2 months", " Build up to 45 minutes 5 days a week by May 1st". I write my goals on an index card and post them on my bathroom mirror so I can read them every morning while I brush my teeth. Keep sight of your goals and have other people keep you accountable in helping you reach them.

9. Have a gym buddy or strong support network. Don't be a loner!

A support network is important to your success if you are not a natural gym rat. Going to the gym or checking in with a buddy will hold you more accountable and is an excellent way to enhance relationships with friends or partners. If you do not have a buddy, tell your friends, partner, or family to hold you accountable for sticking to a plan. You also can sign up for an online personal training program or hire a personal trainer to keep you on track.

10. DON'T be a BABY! Push yourself!

Your workouts should incorporate moderately intense cardiovascular training and strength training. Moderately intense means, that you should break a sweat, breath heavier than normal, and not be able to carry on a conversation. However, make sure you are still breathing! A good rule of thumb is that you are able to say two sentences without having to stop to take a breath. If you want to be technical, you can take your maximum heart (Your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age) rate and times it by.6 and.8. Your exercising heart rate should be in that rage if you are healthy. (ACE, Personal Trainer Manual).

How's Your Water Quality? Today?



A few years back, I remember a very interesting piece by the news show 20/20 showing that bottled water was mostly just "marketing" and no substance. They set up what was the water equivalent to the "Pepsi Challenge" - stopping New Yorkers as they shopped, asking them to taste several samples of water, with the video showing person after person actually choosing "New York City Tap Water" as their favourite, after their name brand bottled water alternatives. The premise is fine - people chose based on their taste preferences. The numbers weren't disclosed and they only showed the people that "preferred" the tap water for the video, but they made their point - or did they?

Just this week, New York was mandated by the EPA to reduce the lead detected in their public school's tap water - the water in the fountains, the water children drank every day while attending classes. (If you're a fan of irony, picture sending your kids to school to learn and hearing they have been drinking something that lowers IQ!) Last week, there was a story about water quality in Cedar City, Utah - this time, they had detected excessive nitrate levels in the water and needed to reduce them to legal limits. Nitrates in drinking water cause what is referred to as "blue baby syndrome" in infants, and all around is something to be avoided in drinking water.

So where am I going with this? The water that we always take for granted, the water that is supposedly safe for us, from time to time does test positive for contaminants that are known to be harmful to us. There is no disputing it; there are chemicals in water, plenty of them - whether drugs from prescriptions, disinfection by-products from adding chlorine (and in Edmonton city water's case, also the addition of ammonia,) fluoride (which has been in the news a lot as of late and something people are now treating as a contaminant rather than a health benefit) - the issue is: what is safe, at what level and what are the risks?

When I visit rural land owners (farms, acreages, etc.) with private wells - many times people drink the water right from the well with no treatment at all. "If it was safe for my Great Grandpa who dug the well 100 years ago, it oughta be safe for me now!" - I hear this all the time. Problem is - there are about 10,000 new chemicals added to our environment every single year now. There are literally millions of chemicals, drugs, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides that are sprayed, used and also rain down from the air pollution so prevalent these days. What was safe 100 years ago, 50 years ago, or even 20 or 30 years ago may not be safe any more.

Municipalities can be slow to react to threats - often because there are so many things we don't even bother testing for. What it comes down to is the plain fact that we don't always know what is in our water - and with the rates of cancer these days being what they are, does it not make sense to be safe, invest a little in prevention and make sure the water you and your family drink is just good old H2O? ADD Versus ADHD, What Is The Difference, And How It Applies To You And Your Child



People often ask what are the differences between ADD versus ADHD. ADD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder and ADHD stands for Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder. Diet Reviews Of Several Well Known Diet Plans



A review of any diet plan or system will have some pros and some cons to it, and I want to share the results and review of a few of them below. I am listing my successes with each of the diets below, as well as my comments on each based on my experience and research of each of them.

1. Hoodia: I lost 28 pounds but felt jittery and nervous most of the time while I was taking Hoodia. My research about Hoodia is that it does work for a short time for most people, but it is very important to consult your doctor prior to taking any supplement. I stopped taking it after feeling so nervous most of the time while taking it.

2. Sensa: I actually gained weight while I was on Sensa, and when I tried to return it, it was almost impossible to do. In my research of others with this product, they seemed to have the same problem which I had. However, I have also found some people who say it works for them, but I could never talk to them to find out more about how they felt about the product either. If you do purchase this system and you want to return it, make sure you follow the rules exactly and make sure you send it with a delivery confirmation.

3. Weight Watchers: I lost weight with Weight Watchers all three of the times I joined them. I lost an average of 43 to 58 pounds each time. The meetings were informative, encouraging, and uplifting, but the fact that I had to attend a meeting each week was very difficult for me. The meetings were basically pep rallies and I think, for me at least, that it became a repeat of the week before and I eventually lost interest in the meetings. That was the biggest problem for me, but when I stuck to the system and went to the meetings, their plan absolutely did work. The problem I have found to be true for many of the people we talked to was that once you quit going to the meetings, it is extremely easy to regain your weight, plus more. However, that applies to any diet.

4. Jenny Craig: The prepackaged meals worked for me for a short time. The problem I have found from many people in my research, as well as for myself, is that the meals became very boring and as soon as I started eating"regular" meals, I gained my weight all back. I was only able to stay on this diet plan for a little over two months. I lost 23 pounds in that time period, and have heard from others that they had a similar experience like I did. My research indicated that if you can stay at home and not eat out, this plan can work for you, but it can get boring and people say they do feel hungry a lot.

5. Form U Three: As long as I went to their weekly meetings, I did lose some weight, but as soon as I stopped going to the meetings, I gained my weight back. I lost a total of 38 pounds over a four month period. The good thing about Form U Three was that they did teach you how to eat at home and also be able to eat out, but it was very expensive and the meetings were simply weighing in and talking to a weight loss counselor for about 5 minutes, and you were on your way again. I cannot find that this company is even in business any longer.

6. Suzanne Somers: I lost about 26 pounds, but I became very weak physically. I ended up needing to go to my doctor because I was so weak, and he told me to go directly across the street to McDonalds and eat a quarter pounder. I probably was never so happy to abide by my doctor's instruction in my life. I ate a quarter pounder, and believe it or not, I did feel better. He told me I was very low on carbs by attending to this plan.

7. Atkins Diet: l had almost the exact same result with this diet that I had while I was on the Suzanne Somers diet plan. I lost less than 18 pounds on this diet, but I think I would have lost more if I was not so concerned about getting sick again, especially since I personally felt it was very close to Suzanne Somers diet plan. My research did find that the Atkins Diet has been around for a long time and the people who do like it, go on and off of it from time to time. It seems to work if you do not need to lose a lot of weight. The main concern is to be very careful that you are feeling good and if you do become weak, see your doctor right away.

8. Doctor Piatek: I went to a specialist who did a thorough exam and lab work on me. He prescribed medicine and I did lose 38 pounds, but my body built up a tolerance to the medicine and I stopped losing weight after about three months. I continued to take the medicine for another three months, but I never lost any additional weight. I know of others who have taken this exact same medicine and they have told me that it did the same thing with them, however, some of them only needed to lose very little weight compared to me and they seemed to do well on it.

The bottom line of any diet is being able to stick to it, we all know that, but I think the biggest success of any diet is being able to be able to control your hunger. I think if a person can find a plan that helps them to control their hunger, then that is when the most success will come to them. It does take discipline, of course, so I encourage you to become aware of your body and the needs it REALLY has and choose a plan or system that works best for you.

What Is Ergonomic Balance?

Ergonomic is term we use to create a productive, safe and efficient environment for the workplace, which for my readers is not exclusively the employment environment; it is also the home environment.

Ergonomic balance is the sitting or standing position we use for safe, purposeful and productive activity in an ergonomic environment.

Ergonomic balance is developed through our early childhood development through play and will not change throughout your entire life, unless we want it to change.

If you remain your normal adult weight throughout your lifetime, then there is no reason to change your ergonomic balance as you will not have any balance problems.

However, if you have gained in excess of 5-10 pounds over your normal weight; then your skeletal joints will suffer from the excess weight that has not been accounted for in your ergonomic movements.

The laws of Physics will help you understand this concept, for example: If you look at 2 people of identical heights and weights sitting on a see saw. The see saw will be balanced on both sides.

If this was your body, then your body would be balanced according to normal weight. But say one person puts on 20 pounds in weight. The see saw is no longer balanced and would be totally lopsided to one side.

The see-saw cannot balance because there is too much weight on one side.

In order to make it balanced again, the middle post has to be moved towards the heavier side, so that it becomes balanced again.

In other words, the balance of your skeletal joints has to be modified, in order to accommodate this extra weight on your body.

Your body is unable to do this, because your bodys autonomic nervous system is only designed for your normal weight. It cannot accommodate any changes in body weight, because you are not supposed to have excess weight.

You need to make this change yourself, or you will start getting pains in your skeletal joints that will gradually become worse, until they become a chronic problem.

Ergonomic balance is the way that you sit or stand for performing productive, safe and efficient movement and efficient movements.

If you remain the same weight throughout your life time, your ergonomic balance will be within normal limits and you will not have any pains in your joints, unless you have a specific medical condition.

If you weight more than you did in your early adult years, then you may be suffering from skeletal discomforts that will not go away.

You either need to lose that extra weight that you are carrying, or you need to recalibrate your skeletal joints, so that they make allowances for this extra weight.
