Ayurveda is one of the oldest holistic healing practices around starting in India for over 5,000 years. The name actually means "science of life". It is a great alternative healing therapy that people are using more and more in their lives because it uses only natural therapies, with no chemicals involved whatsoever. Also it has a holistic approach which takes into account not only the body, but also the mind and spirit.
With Ayurveda you receive a very personalized healing. We are not the same and while traditional medicine tends to focus on the symptom, regardless of the actual person, with ayurveda you are actually treated as an individual who needs a particular type of treatment. During an initial consultation, the practitioner looks at your eating habits, your diet, the type of your body, the hygiene you apply to it, basically everything.
During this session you will get your own dincharya, your personal routine for every day that you need to follow regularly. Also there will be seasonal routines (ritucharya) which you also need to pay attention to.
In order to draw the relevant conclusion on what routine you need to follow, the practitioner will look at you as a whole, concentrating on your skin, nails, your appearance, your eyes. He will do this by observing (Darshan).
Then he will touch you by taking your pulse, will look at your tongue and will press on various of your body parts so that he or she can hear the various noises that your body is making (e.g. your stomach).
Then he will hold a conversation with you by asking you all sorts of questions about your physical health, your emotional and mental well being. This is called Prashna.
Once he used all these consultation techniques, he will go on and make the appropriate diagnosis and give you the relevant routine based on his treatment prescribed. This treatment has as aim to help you in strengthening your body energy so that you can heal faster.
Some of the main ailments that ayurveda can help with are various allergies, constipation, arthritis and many other chronic diseases. For example for allergies it recommends drinking chamomile tea due to its natural antihistamine properties. When it comes to arthritis it recommends using turmeric powder and garlic. Also in the case of constipation tamarind pulps are said to be working well along with Amaltas in a mix.
Even without going to an Ayurvedic practitioner you can easily benefit from this healing as there are countless Ayurvedic natural products available to purchase these day in the Western countries. However before buying anything that is a remedy, make sure you fully understand all the side-effects that the product might have. This is why it is best to consult a healer instead of taking the matters into your own hands for best and safest results.
