An Overview of the Treatment of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is not only debilitating, it is also costly. In fact, studies show that $14 billion is spent yearly on Osteoporosis related injuries like bone fractures. It is important then that treatment must be sought out if you or someone you love has been afflicted with this disease.

Although there is no surefire way to treat osteoporosis, there is a lot people can do to alleviate its symptoms, maintain it and slow down its progression so that they may live relatively normal lives. Before you try any of the treatments stated below, make sure you consult a physician or an orthodontist to make sure you wont make yourself worst.

Diet has always been an important factor to a persons well-being, more so a person stricken with Osteoporosis. People with this disease, or even those who are starting to show signs of the disease, are advised to get the recommended daily amount of calcium, which is around 1,000 mgs, depending on a persons weight and build. For those who are lactose intolerant, or simply hate milk, eating salmon, nuts, green leafy vegetables, fruits, and tofu can give you the amount of calcium you need.

A person with Osteoporosis is encouraged to have some form of exercise as inactivity can worsen the disease. However, one must consult the doctor first and not do exercise routines where one is in danger of breaking their bones. Taking a brisk walk everyday can raise.

For those who have already suffered bone loss, medications usually given by doctors include Biphosphonates, which stops the body from slowly breaking down the bone. A new treatment entails injecting the patients body with Parathyroid hormone to encourage the growth of new bone formations.
