Are You Working Toward Six Pack Abs Or Preventing Them?

If you are the typical adult, you will assume that teenagers think they know everything. Do you know the typical adult, at least that I've run into, also assume they know everything about something they will do? As a personal trainer I have seen this with almost every client of mine, that want six pack abs, who walk through my door for the first time. Guess what, 9/10 times they are following an "old wives tale" or following common myths they overheard.

There are several common factors where we fight ourselves when it comes to getting six pack abs. If this were a perfect world we would be able to figure out the most impacting mistake people make. I will tell you right now that there will never be any way to figure out which one decreases the chances of getting six pack abs the most. How can you tell if you have been fighting your own efforts back either by bad habits or misinformation? Let's go over some of the core (no pun intended) issues that prevent getting six pack abs!

I find a common mistake in people who work on getting six pack abs to be their six pack diet. The biggest issue with them commonly is that they love to starve themselves of nutrition. I find mostly this comes from either the myth about eating three square meals a day or their own assumption. You can't blame the assumption, after all in theory less calories does equal less fat being stored. The issue with this is that you need fuel to function, and part of the fuel you consume is protein which helps to build muscle.

Another issue that comes with starvation and an effort at getting six pack abs is your metabolism. Imagine it as a cell phone, if you charge your metabolism once, or in a spaced out way and constantly talk on it you won't get very far. However, if you were to constantly talk on your phone but are charging it regularly, the battery life will remain plentiful! Feeding your metabolism and not missing meals will ensure your metabolism works at a constant pace. Getting six pack abs works best when you are letting your metabolism work even when you are not working out!

Another common mistake is going on the assumption a couple of crunches will ensure you get a six pack. I am not taking anything away from crunches, in fact they are amazing and extremely effective in getting a six pack, probably because they target a muscle that results in six pack abs. There are four muscles that really make up a set of six pack abs (5 in my opinion).

Another common, and very detrimental, habit that prevent getting a six pack is trying too hard. Trying too hard to get a six pack can come in numerous ways. Some ways in which you could be trying too hard to get six pack abs could be overworking your muscles through doing hundreds of crunches at a time. Another way you could be trying too hard and defeating the purpose is through severely altering your form to get those last two crunches in.

In the end, getting a six pack takes a bit more knowledge and factors than you probably assumed. Realizing that crunches aren't the main focus for actually getting six pack abs is a great start. Adding in the proper way to nourish your six pack abs is another crucial factor and understanding there is more musculature than you may have initially thought, and how to work those muscles can be seen as the "icing on the cake".
