Thyroid Problems - Common Symptoms of Thyroid Issues

Many people will have thyroid issues and not even be aware that there is a problem. Some basic signs of thyroid problems may be subtle, and experiencing one or more of these signs may indicate a thyroid issue.

- Muscle or joint pain may indicate a thyroid problem. Aches and pains in the muscles or joints along with general muscle weakness may indicate a possibility of an undiagnosed thyroid problem. Usually these discomforts will resolve as the thyroid issue is treated.

- Fertility issues may be cause by thyroid dysfunction. Heavier and frequent or light and infrequent menstrual cycles in women as well as general infertility in men or women, may indicate a thyroid issue. In extreme instances a thyroid issue could result in miscarriage.

- Neck swelling or discomfort is another sign of a thyroid issue. Occasionally symptoms include something as simple as a hoarse voice or as uncomfortable as neck stiffness or a visibly swollen thyroid. Often the voice will grow deeper and raspy. The enlarged thyroid will sometime be visible on the neck just above the collar bone, and may oftentimes be tender to the touch.

- Those with a history within their families of thyroid issue are more at risk genetically. If there is a family history of thyroid problems it is even more important to watch for medical symptoms of a thyroid ailment. Speak with your doctor immediately should you suspect an unhealthy thyroid and schedule regular checkups to maintain a healthy body.

- Hair may become brittle, coarse, or even fall out as result of a thyroid problem. Skin may also become dry or scaly, or in severe instances even become thin and tender.

- Mood changes as extreme as depression, anxiety, or even panic attacks may be symptoms of thyroid problems. Especially depression that does not alleviate as prescription antidepressants are taken.

- Consistent bowl issues ranging from prolonged constipation to upset stomach or diarrhea and frequent bowel movements. Sudden changes or an ongoing irregularity could be a sign of a thyroid issue.

- Sleep issues may be cause of thyroid dysfunction. Insomnia may be one symptom, but also fatigue or unwarranted exhaustion. Some thyroid sufferers sleep eight to ten hours a night and still may not be able to function throughout the day, requiring rest or naps.

- Cholesterol changes, high or low, which do not respond to medications, or changes in exercise and diet adjustments, may be caused by thyroid problems. Cholesterol spikes of drops may be caused by many factors, so it is best to speak with a doctor to rule out other possible causes.

- Weight change can be cause by an unhealthy thyroid. Weight issues can range from an inability to lose weight, losing weight while making no diet or exercise changes, or losing weight while even eating more than typical.

One or more of these symptoms may indicate a thyroid issue. Thyroid issues from overactive or under active thyroid can be difficult to diagnose, and can affect a range of people from infants to adults. It is important, as with any medical condition, to speak with a doctor about symptoms and the range of possible causes and treatments.
