The summer sun can make the healthiest person wilt really fast but whenever you add fibromyalgia to that mix, your aches and pains will probably go into overdrive. Of course, there are also some fibromyalgia patients who find the heat to be a great relief. However, even these people can suffer if they are not comfortable. Too much heat and sun can make your fibromyalgia knots cry out for relief.
Combating Dehydration
A major problem that exists in the summertime is dehydration. Combine the summer heat with the medications and supplements that fibromyalgia patients take and your muscles will be crying out for nourishment. Add to this the sweating because of the heat and this only makes things even worse. So, if you are outside and begin to feel lightheaded, go inside and drink a glass of water. This is especially important for those who have fibromyalgia because you can get dehydrated even quicker. You may not even know when this happens because the most common sign is a headache, which most fibromyalgia patients already suffer from on a regular basis anyway.
Throughout the summer you should be drinking as much water as possible (a gallon per day is recommended). For those who dont like drinking water, try to add some lemon or lime to create a refreshing flavor without adding any calories. Try to avoid drinking tea (this is a diuretic that will quickly pass through you) or soda (too much sugar or high fructose corn syrup). If you still cant stand the taste of plain water and dont want to add lemon or lime to it, then try vitamin water or flavored water. Whenever you are looking to purchase one of these, make sure to take a look at the label so that you can avoid those that are high in sugar or high fructose corn syrup.
Avoid Getting A Sunburn
While getting enough sun is important for the Vitamin D it provides (this fights off depression and helps you be somewhat active, which is good since part of the fibromyalgia pain is due to lack of blood circulation), you dont want to get a sunburn so make sure to use sun block.
Wear Loose-Weave Clothing
It is also a good idea to wear loose-weave clothing such as drawstring pants and pull over shirts. Make sure that your clothes are both cool and comfortable as this will help keep you cooler.
